Nineteen church leaders attended LeaderBreakthru/AZSBC Coaching Skills Training at the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention office April 19-20. Thirteen more received advanced training May 24-25 that began a six-month supervised process leading them to become LeaderBreakthru certified life coaches.
The two trainings were lead by Keith Henry. AZSBC church life facilitator and certified coach, and Terry Walling, president of LeaderBreakthru mininstries.
According to Henry, the men and women trained as coaches will invest in pastors and other leaders of AZSBC churches to see disciples, leaders and churches multiplied in Arizona.
“Coaches have two primary skills,” Henry said. “They listen well, and they ask open-ended questions that help leaders discover God’s voice for their life through the application of Scripture and the work of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of coaching is to help leaders achieve ministry and personal breakthrough to accomplish their God-given ministry.”
This helps leaders navigate a discovery process to develop a clear vision, create a realistic plan focused on that vision, and take the necessary steps to reach its fulfillment.
Coaching can be done one-on-one: pastor to pastor, ministry leader to ministry leader. To walk through all the steps takes five months of guidance, support, and a partner who will listen and help a leader process specific issues and concerns.
“When people attend a seminar or class, they only retain small portions of the information,” Henry said. “Coaching helps reinforce that training. It’s an important part of equipping leaders to become stronger, healthier, more focused and committed.”
Although no date has been set for training in 2018, the coaching network is available to those interested.
